CYBN MEMBERSHIP
To be a member of the Canadian Youth Biodiversity Network means you are a concerned youth who wants to do more to protect Canadian biodiversity and ensure a more sustainable planet in this time of climate crisis. Whether you are actively participating in conservation projects, working for environmental agencies, or would simply like to learn more about biodiversity issues and how you can contribute; becoming a CYBN member will build your capacity to be a youth advocate for nature.
Members will have access to a wealth of informational resources from the Global Youth Biodiversity Network, the Convention on Biological Diversity, and various other national and international biodiversity frameworks. While working in this context, individual members and groups will have the opportunity to share their experiences, issues and advice with the wider network, so that we may all work together for the benefit of Canadian Biodiversity.
Through our internal network and external social media audience, we will share and promote your group's projects, or biodiversity issues happening in your community. Many opportunities for promotion and collaboration will happen through digital media channels such as webinars, workshops, interviews, and when possible, in-person meetups.
Members will be given priority access to opportunities within the network. The types of opportunities that will be presented can include volunteer positions on various projects, attending online and in-person events, chances to contribute to policy recommendations and other projects, and a chance to participate in the discussion on improving biodiversity in your community, province and country.
To be alerted of these up and coming opportunities, members can be alerted through discussion forums, blog posts, and newsletters.
Through participation in the network: members are encouraged to make connections of other individuals and groups all over the country and their home province. Connections can be made through our website, different social media platforms, working groups and other opportunities.
Within our mandate, we aim to influence biodiversity, environmental and development policies (both domestically and internationally) through different working groups. More specifically, members are allowed to work within the network in different working groups to influence policies.
Working groups are set up through the best interest of the Youth involved. For example, the Policy Task Force is open to all members to apply and then be selected based on interested individuals.
The goal for different working groups is to provide your unique input for current international, national, and provincial issues. Participation is voluntary, but highly encouraged.
We welcome members who wish to be spectators at the time of applying for membership.

MEMBERSHIP TYPESMember Groups:
All groups wanting to join as a member of CYBN are required to have a youth focus or youth members involved in the organization. Groups involved should align with our mission and value statements as well as CYBN’s Charter/Statue. Two categories of Member Groups include Youth Groups and Youth-Focused Groups. Youth Groups are organizations that focuses primarily on youth participation, education and development. Youth-Focused Groups are any groups have a section of their overall organization dedicated to youth. Member Groups are encouraged to reach out if they can/want to provide any opportunities within their group or even associated with their group. Member groups are able to reach different target audiences in which they would like to reach (general public or CYBN Members). All Member groups will have the right to be reserved one vote in matters that require a democratic consensus. In the case of Youth Focused Group, they will be asked to appoint one Youth representative in order to cast and participate with in their network. Member Individuals: Youth (18-30) As described by the United Nations, Youth is any individual from the age of 18-30. Individual members seeking out a Youth Membership are required to be in this age range. Each member has the right to 1 vote similarly to member groups. Youth Members have access to participating and different opportunities such as working groups and opportunities provided by other members. Youth individuals are encouraged to make connections in their local area and throughout the network. Youth Members do not need to be associated with a group to join the network. Mentor (30<) Mentor Members are described as individuals that are above the age of 30 and are interested in promoting and helping CYBN develop and continue. Mentor Members are restricted to certain opportunities as their role in the network is mainly for guidance. Mentors are encouraged to share opportunities that they think can benefit the network and the youth involved! The primary role of a Mentor Member is to provide guidance and advice to where they see fit. As Youth who have had little experience in life, we look to our elders to teach us valuable information that can help youth and the network grow further. Pre-Youth (18>) Pre-Youth Members are described as individuals that are below the age of 18. The network does not want to restrict any interested and passionate individual below the age of 18. The network hopes to mentor Pre-Youth on a variety of topics such as the Convention on Biological Diversity, Sustainable Development Goals and other topics that are of interest to them. Although certain opportunities will be restricted to their age, we hope to provide other opportunities that can help them in the future. |
